Winnie Eynstone died peacefully at the Weston Terrace care home in Toronto on December 7, 2023, just shy of her 86th birthday. Winnie was born in Shanghai, China, on December 13, 1937, to Ming Ching and Reginald Eynstone. Winnie is survived by her older sister Vera, and her niece and nephews, Kerry, Richard, and Jason.
Winnie lived a full and adventurous life, having survived the occupation of China and then sailing to England by ship with her family. As a young adult, Winnie travelled to Banff National Park in Canada, where she worked at the famous Banff Springs Hotel. Winnie decided to stay in Canada and settled in Toronto. Winnie was once an assistant to Glen Gould, one of Canada’s most celebrated classical pianists. She spent most of her career, however, working for the City of Toronto.
Winnie loved attending the opera, Shakespeare plays in Stratford, and night courses at Ryerson College. Winnie was very fond of her friends and neighbours, including Margaret and Roderick. Despite her short stature, Winnie was a very fast walker and loved to walk the busy streets of her beloved Toronto.
Winnie will be dearly missed.
A special thanks to the staff at Weston Terrace for caring for Winnie and the hard work they do for all of the residents. Care workers are owed not just a great deal of gratitude, but more importantly: pay, working conditions, and the respect they so rightly deserve.
