Jack Allan, 75, of Stoney Creek, passed away on April 28, 2025, in Hamilton, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a truly impressive collection of boat shoes.
Born in Listowel, Ontario, Jack was the eldest child of Johnson and Isabelle Allan and big brother to Margaret (Blaine McGruther) and Elizabeth (Gunter Menrath). He grew up in Fergus, where he first honed the charm, curiosity, and quiet stubbornness that would serve him so well throughout life.
A graduate of Waterloo Lutheran University (now Wilfrid Laurier), Jack earned his Bachelor of Economics and put it to good use building a long and respected career in insurance, from which he retired in 2008.
On July 18, 1970, Jack married Carol Anne Speers in Elora, beginning a partnership of nearly 55 years. Together, they settled in Toronto and eventually Brampton, where they raised three children — Kelley Marie (d. Stephen MacDonald), Daniel Johnson (Allyson Diggins), and Amanda Elizabeth (Andrew Barks).
Jack was a man of many passions. In his youth, he was a standout in both Canada's games - one of the region's top hockey goaltenders and an award-winning lacrosse captain - and could always be found at the arena, either playing or coaching. He was an avid boater whose weekends were spent at the docks of Port Credit and Fifty Point. He had a knack for the slot machines, knew all the lyrics to any "oldies" song, and played countless rounds with his golf buddies, where his handicap was only exceeded by his storytelling on the 19th hole. Jack was a classic car enthusiast, and we are grateful he was finally able to purchase one of his own shortly before his passing.
Ever careful, organized and arguably a bit too particular, his sharp wit, strong work ethic and deeply rooted sense of values, fairness and reliability set a shining example for his family and left an imprint on everyone lucky enough to know him. Jack’s legacy is certain to live on in Carol, his children and five grandchildren - Tobias, Rose, William, Mathew and Hannah.
A celebration of Jack’s life will be held at a later date. (He was always late anyway.)
He is gone from our sight, but not from our stories. And if there is a marina up there, you can bet Jack has already found it — and negotiated a better slip fee.
