William Clifton Dumaresq passed away peacefully on April 23, 2026 at City View Retirement Home, Ottawa with his family at his side.
He was born in L’Anse au Clair, Labrador on October 27, 1934, where he attended St. Andrew’s all grade school completing all eleven grades there. After taking a 6-week teacher training course in St. John’s, he taught grades one to eleven in the all-grade school in Capstan Island for one year. Following that he worked for the Hudson’s Bay Company as bookkeeper and then manager in Blanc Sablon, Rigolet, Cartwright, and Goose Bay. He then trained as a machinist in St. John’s and went to work for Wabush Mines in 1967. While in Wabush he met Marilyn who had come to the area as a teacher. They were married in 1976 and welcomed a son and daughter.
Bill retired in 1987 and moved with his family to L’Anse au Clair where he was active in the community as a town councillor and church warden. He enjoyed berry picking, wood cutting, trouting, and card playing. He and Marilyn moved to Ottawa in 2023 to be near their daughter and her family.
He is survived by his wife Marilyn (Bateman), his son William, his daughter Tanya (Prashant D’Costa), grandchildren Robyn, Taryn, and Julian D’Costa, brothers Jerrett (Cora) Letto, Irving Letto, Harrison Letto, and Graham (Audrey) Letto, and brothers-in-law Edgar (Ann) Bateman, George (Ruth) Bateman, Fred (Sophie) Bateman, and Hugh (Lois) Bateman.
He was predeceased by mother Elsie Dumaresq Letto, father William A. Dumaresq, stepfather Hayward Letto, brother Louis Dumaresq, sisters-in-law Hazel Dumaresq, Rita Letto, and Maizie Letto.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, L’Anse au Clair.
Donations in his memory may be made to St. Andrew’s Church (L’Anse au Clair) Memorial Fund, Alongside Hope, or Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society.
