Wendell Shanly Watson was born on May 15, 1927, in Dauphin, Manitoba to Rev. Thomas Shanly Watson and Lulu McKnight Watson. He grew up in Manitoba and northern Ontario, graduating from the University of Manitoba, and then getting his Masters of Education at University of Toronto. Wendell met his first wife, Jean, in Port Arthur, Ontario (now part of Thunder Bay). One of his first teaching experiences was in Nelson House, in northern Manitoba, where he worked with people of the Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation.
His working life was dedicated to education, and he was a principal at several Etobicoke area elementary schools.
In Toronto, he met his second wife, Elizabeth. After they were married, they settled in North York, where they have lived for the last 50 years.
Wendell is pre-deceased by his younger brothers, Trevor Watson and Bruce Watson.
He is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth, his three children, Shannon Gasko (Herman), Kevin Watson (Cindy), and Baron Watson (Linda); his three step-children, John Hancock (Ziggy), David Hancock, and Sarah Edmonds (Dana). He has also left quite a legacy with 19 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Wendell was an avid creator of interesting walking sticks, and he loved a good game of chess or cards. He loved to travel, especially camping in the old Flying ‘W’. Another favourite pastime was listening to Dixieland jazz while enjoying some Bushmills with ice.
Wendell left the party on Oct. 9, 2024, at the age of 97, slipping away peacefully at his long-time home in North York, surrounded by loving family
An informal celebration of life will be held on Sunday, December 8th, 2024. The location is to be determined.
