Lokun, Walter
Walter Lokun passed away peacefully on December 26, 2024 at St Peter's Hospital in Hamilton, at the age of 87. Born on August 4, 1937, he grew up in the Glen Park neighborhood of Toronto, Ontario, Canada and lived a full life throughout southern Ontario. He raised his family in Barrie and Oro Station, and later resided in Midland, Brampton, Milton and Stoney Creek.
In his early years, Walter worked various jobs including delivering prescriptions, working at a gas station, and installing television towers. These experiences instilled in him a strong work ethic that served him well throughout his life, particularly in his career in the grocery industry. He became a respected problem-solver, spending much of his career with Oshawa Foods. Ultimately, his entrepreneurial spirit led him to own a grocery store in Midland and a lighting shop in Barrie.
Walter enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, finding relaxation sitting in the backyard with a cold pop. Walter also loved spending time on the water and had many fond memories of his family's time living on the shores of Lake Simcoe.
Known for his strong will and independent spirit, he enjoyed volunteering as a driver for Seniors Outreach Services and was an avid cribbage player. Never idle, Walter was always embracing new experiences and persevering through challenges. As a traveler of the continents, he enjoyed exploring different cultures, cuisines, and histories. Charismatic and sociable, Walter's spirited opinions and steadfast personality will be dearly missed.
Walter cherished his family, especially his grandchildren. As their “Papa”, he will be remembered for celebrating many milestones with them. Being faith-driven, he was always the one to ensure his family attended mass and was godfather to his grandchildren.
Preceded in death by his parents, Adam Lokun and Sophie Choma, Walter was previously married to Shirley-Jean Maukonen. Walter is survived by his brother, Peter Lokun (Janice), and sister, Helen Veal (Grant), son, Kevin, daughter, Laura-Jeanne McMullen (Michael), and grandchildren Adam, Eric, and Mikayla. He will be missed by many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends, especially Bill, Pam and his very dear friend, Cathy.
Cremation has taken place, and a private family celebration of life will be held in the summertime.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gilda’s Club of Simcoe Muskoka.
The family extends its gratitude to the staff at Hamilton General and St. Peter's Hospital for their compassionate care.
