Walter Broomes transitioned peacefully on February 22, 2026, following a difficult and humbling journey with cancer.
Born in Barbados, Walter carried a lifelong connection to the ocean. The sea reflected much of who he was - freedom, strength, and joy. An accomplished scuba diver, water skier, and flyboarding instructor, he found deep fulfillment both in the ocean and in teaching others to experience its beauty and exhilaration. Those who knew Walter understand that he felt most at home near the water.
Walter was a skilled fusion welder with Sovereign Fusion, where his natural mechanical ability and talent for working with his hands were fully expressed. He took great pride in his craft and in the work he accomplished alongside co-workers who became like family. His time there brought him confidence, purpose, and a true sense of belonging.
As an entrepreneur at heart, Walter valued independence and took pride in building opportunities through his skills, creativity and determination. Over the years, he established several independent businesses, most recently founding Modular Dock Solutions - a venture closely connected to his lifelong love of the water.
Walter touched many lives through his humour, generosity, love of cooking, and unmistakable presence. Like all of us, he was not a perfect man. He faced challenges, made mistakes, and experienced both triumphs and hardships along the way. Yet those who knew him well also witnessed his effort to grow, to learn, and to do right by the people he cared about. At his core, Walter had a good heart, and his impact on others was lasting and real.
During his final days, he was supported with extraordinary kindness by friends, coworkers, and loved ones who ensured he was cared for with love and compassion.
True to the essence of his life, Walter’s passing was accompanied by the sound of ocean waves from the west coast of Barbados resulting in a peaceful return to the waters that helped shape him.
He is lovingly remembered by Maxine Cadogan, Tasha Thomas, Mario Burnett, Damien Burnett, Shakira Issacs, Simone Greaves, Nyah Cadogan, Joyce Broomes, Gail Miller, Karl Broomes, Sharon Broomes, Ryan Greene, Dave Greene, Andy Toppin, and Graham Foster, along with many extended family members, friends, co-workers, and all whose lives were touched by his presence.
The family extends sincere gratitude to the WRHN hospice staff and medical teams, and the Sovereign Fusion and EZ Dock communities for their unwavering love, care and support during Walter’s final chapter.
A celebration of Walter’s life will be announced at a later date.
