The family of Viola Surkan (Boyko) is sad to announce that Viola passed away peacefully at the Peter D Clarke Centre in Ottawa on July 19th, 2023, where she had been a resident for the past 9 years. She was 92 years old.
Viola was married to Matthew Surkan in June 1951 in Edmonton, Alta. and moved to Ottawa shortly thereafter. She leaves behind her husband of 72 years, two married daughters, Diana (Paul) Pepin and Heather (Simon) Nesrallah, 5 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.
Viola was born on a farm in Calder, Sask. on February 22, 1931. She was the youngest of 12 sisters and 1 brother, all but one of whom predeceased her many years ago. Her remaining sister Victoria (Mrs. Jack) MacDonald lives in Theodore, Sask.
She was very much a home body who loved cooking, knitting, and sewing beautiful clothes for her daughters. She also had a special interest in antiques and memorabilia from years gone by and was very active in the business of collecting and flea marketing. She was the owner of the Colonnade and Bentley Flea Markets in Ottawa for several years.
A Memorial Service for Viola will be held at a later date.
Rest in peace Vy. We will love you forever.
