On Sunday August 24, 2025 at Ottawa General Hospital, Victor Hugh Dyke gently “slipped the surly bonds of Earth” in the company of family at the age of 70. Soulmate to his eternal love, Sue Pearson. Much loved brother of sisters Sandra Burke (David) and Jennifer Dyke, and to brothers Jason Dyke (Frantzia) and Allan Dyke (Nicole). Fun-loving Uncle to Jordan and Jazmine. United once again with his parents Hugh and Luella, and furry rascals Sol and Finnegan.
Victor's was a life well lived. His kind, generous and mischievous nature will be missed by all who knew him. He had the privilege, as a graduating high school student, of travelling to China before it was generally open to international travellers. The kitchen was his happy place where he would spend hours lovingly whipping up delicious meals for family and friends. Vic was a walking encyclopedia, with a vast knowledge of art, film, music, literature, history, religion… you name it - he knew it.
He studied film and photography at Humber College and Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in Toronto. He had been accepted to a New York film school, but tuition was double. Among his many accomplishments was his videography for Saw Video Co-op & Le Groupe de la Place Royale, Nighttime DJ and writer of a radio play for CKCU, head of the video department at Ottawa Board of Education and eventually overseeing their computer network.
A big thank you to Roger Michon for all of his help and renovations in anticipation of Vic’s return home. Thank you to friends that contributed photos and especially to Sue Pearson for inspiration writing this. Thank you also to the care teams at Ottawa Civic Hospital, the Heart Institute, Ottawa General Hospital, and the Ottawa Rehabilitation Centre for their compassionate care.
To quote one of his favourite authors, Umberto Eco, “Absence is to love as wind is to fire: it extinguishes the little flame, it fans the big. What is life if not the shadow of a fleeting dream"
"Slipped the surly…” quote by John Gillespie Magee
Victor did not wish to have a funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CKCU-FM or University of Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation.
