Velma Joy (Yoxall) Hatoski

July 2, 1946 — June 18, 2023

Burlington

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Velma Joy Hatoski at the age of 76 at Joseph Brant Hospital. Velma leaves behind her husband of 55 years Michael Hatoski, her daughter Karen Ashford (Blair), grandchildren Faith Ashford (Brendan Belanger) and Liam Ashford (Trinity Shilleto), sister Ruth Moshonas and her nieces Rayna Porter (Andrew) and Calie Krauss (Todd).

Velma’s father, Arthur Yoxall, was in the RCAF and met Velma’s mother, Gladys (nee Kimberley) during WWII. Velma was born in England and was 4 years old when they flew to Canada and settled in Mississauga. She graduated from high school and started nursing, but decided that was not for her. She met Michael, married and had Karen, the next year. Velma wanted 12 children, but because Karen was such a wonderful baby she stopped at one. Velma and Mike moved to Burlington, and she became a stay at home mom and in home babysitter. A Girl Guide as a teen, Velma became a Brown Owl for many years. She was always knitting, very devoted to her church and very supportive of her family. Later, she got a new title, Granny, and she was always proud of Faith, and Liam and everything they did. Velma seemed happiest when she was knitting whether it was sweaters for family, blankets for newborns or mittens and hats for those in need.

Please consider a donation to GFA World (Gospel for Asia) or Covenant House in memory of Velma.
