It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Umberto Marasco. Born in Foggia (Italy) during World War II, he was the second of nine children. As a young man, he served in the Italian military for eighteen months, something that he often spoke about and remembered fondly. This experience was the beginning of his limitless curiosity and desire to see the world.
Umberto immigrated to Canada in 1966 via Montreal before settling in Toronto. Shortly after arriving to Toronto, he became acquainted with Masami Tsuruoka (the father of Canadian karate) and became a dedicated karate student. Karate and its principles became the backbone of Umberto’s life. He enthusiastically shared them with others and encouraged others to follow them as well.
Umberto was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Marta, his children Olivia (David) and Maurizio (Maria), and his grandchildren, Mason, Maxten, Myken, and Lorenzo.
"The ultimate aim of karate lies not in victory nor defeat, but in the perfection of the character of its participants". - Gichin Funakoshi
