Sydney John Peel was born in Ottawa, 65 years ago, to Gordon Kenneth Peel of Diamond Valley, Alberta, and Ann Shone of Windsor, Ontario. His parents pre-deceased him, as did sister Janet Klok. He is survived by siblings Nancy Peel, David Peel, and Sue Perry; and by four nephews, two nieces, five great-nephews and two great-nieces. Syd was born with a curious mind, always wanting to learn more; as a child he persuaded his parents to purchase the World Book encyclopedia, which he then read from cover to cover. Although he had a pessimistic view of the world and its future, his serious demeanour belied a wicked wit. He lived in Calgary, Bezanson, and Windsor, among other cities, in childhood, before his career took him to Uxbridge, Toronto, Thunder Bay, Greenwood, Montreal, and Thornhill. After brief stints as a farmer, physicist, and high school teacher, he found his niche as a meteorologist and later research scientist with Environment Canada, from which he recently retired. As per Syd’s wishes, there will be no service. If you so desire, donations may be made in his memory to a charity of your choice.
