Steve Derrick Maphangoh passed away on January 21,2026 at the age of 82.

Born in Zimbabwe, Steve left his family home at a young age to pursue his education in Europe. His academic journey eventually led him to Canada, where he settled and spent much of his adult life. He was deeply committed to learning and achieved multiple academic degrees, including a degree from Harvard University.

Throughout his life, Steve maintained connections with family, academic colleagues, and loved ones residing in various parts of the world. He is survived by his daughters, Sipo and Nomsa, his son-in-law Marcus, his grandchildren, Konrad, Orion, Julia, and Lincoln, as well as members of his family, including his beloved younger brother, Nelson, and son, Vusi (Prince).

Steve lived a complex and independent life shaped by movement across continents, cultures, and experiences. While relationships with immediate family members were distant in later years, Steve held a deep affection for his grandchildren, whom he loved and adored.

He will be remembered by those who knew him in different seasons of his life, and his legacy remains part of the broader family history that spans generations and continents.

In keeping with his wishes, Steve was cremated. A formal service will not be held. At a future date, his daughters intend to return his ashes to South Africa.
