Shirley Nora Sutherland, born on January 14, 1943, and a beloved matriarch, passed peacefully in her sleep at her residence in Forest Hill, Kanata, Ontario, on December 28, 2024. She was surrounded by the love and warmth of her family, which she cherished above all else.
Shirley is survived by her devoted sons, Kevan (Beth) Ellis and David Sutherland, along with her caring daughters, Brenda Block and Kellie Soares. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren—Steve, Sherry, Hannah, Kayla, and Jesse—who are a testament to her nurturing spirit. Additionally, her great-grandchildren, Hugh, Poseidon, Ethan, Natalie, Javin, and Jordan, carry forth the joy and laughter she instilled in her family.
She was the daughter of Wesley James and Florence Heinz and was predeceased by her siblings—Melvin, Jean, Orlan, and Joy.
Shirley was a kind and happy soul known for her remarkable sense of humor. Her ability to uplift others with a smile and a well-timed joke was a defining characteristic. Those who knew her will fondly remember her quirky sayings and one-liners that could diffuse tension and bring joy. Shirley had an undeniable gift for making connections, often striking up conversations with strangers and offering her support to anyone in need.
Her love for nature and the outdoors fueled many treasured moments, and her affection for pets and animals added warmth to her home. She enjoyed watching her favorite soap operas, savoring peaceful moments with her cup of coffee or a can of PEPSI in hand.
Shirley’s family will gather for a small, intimate remembrance of her life on May 24 from noon to 4 PM at a private residence in Combermere, Ontario, where stories and memories will be shared among close friends and loved ones.
Shirley is deeply missed, yet her compassion for others, zest for life, and infectious laughter continue to resonate within the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
