After a long life, well-lived, Santosh Mathur, born 1931 in Agra, India died August 16 in Mississauga following a short illness at age 95. He was at peace and had been visited every day by family and his many friends while in the hospital. Santosh was predeceased by ex-wife Florence, and lost his dear wife and travel partner, Sumathy, three years ago. He is survived by his son, Neil (Meg), stepson Jay (Joanne), and stepdaughter Anita. Grandpa to Jay, Jace, Thomas and Lola, he showed us all that life is for living.
His long retirement was filled with world travel including a solo winter 2026 trip to visit his brother Yogesh and family in Mumbai. Santosh was a dedicated volunteer and honoured by the mayor for his years of community service. He was a civil engineer by training, having attended the University of Roorkee and University of Toronto. Santosh worked in Montreal at Expo ’67 and then moved the family to Hamilton where he became an award-winning professor in the Architectural Technology program at Mohawk College.
He was a lifelong learner and in recent times could often be found in the sunny reading room at the Hazel McCallion Library with the New York Times or Globe & Mail in hand. Or meeting good friends for a game of pool at the condo or chess over Tim Hortons.
Santosh devoured books on philosophy and religion and particularly enjoyed the teachings of the Roman stoic philosophers, such as Marcus Aurelius, who reminds us “Death smiles at us all; all a man can do is smile back.”
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Santosh Mathur’s memory to one of his favourite places on earth, the Mississauga Public Library.
The service will be livestreamed. Please contact the family if you wish to receive the link.
