It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sandra Boyuk, a remarkable woman whose life was defined by strength, resilience, and a fierce independence.
Sandra was born in Sudbury, Ontario, on December 8, 1945, and passed away on September 5, 2024, with her beloved son Michael by her side.
Sandra lived life on her terms. Her favourite place in the world was her cottage, where she spent countless hours tending to her incredible garden. Filled with vibrant flowers, it was a peaceful and beautiful sanctuary. Sandra felt closest to God in her garden and at camp, where she found serenity, peace, and occasionally poison ivy.
A dedicated school teacher with a passion for music, Sandra loved entering her students into the Kiwanis Festival, where her classes won first place several times. She was actively involved with the Ukrainian Seniors’ Centre in Sudbury, was a proud member of the church choir, and served as a camp counselor at Villa Maria Camp.
In addition to her community involvement, Sandra spent a few winters in Florida, enjoying the sun while picking and endlessly squeezing grapefruits and oranges.
Sandra was the first female teacher in the Sudbury Catholic District Schoolboard to return to work after having a child while unmarried—she fought for that right. In an era when societal norms stood against her, Sandra boldly challenged the system, ensuring she could continue her career while raising her child, paving the way for others who followed. Sandra was witty, smart, and brave—qualities that carried her through life’s challenges.
Sandra had a love for life’s simple pleasures, especially shopping at Dollarama, Temu, and Giant Tiger. She was a thrifty shopper with an eye for fashionable yet discounted items, always finding joy in discovering the perfect bargain.
Even in the face of health struggles, Sandra never let them dampen her spirit. She remained strong, never complained, and fought with the same tenacity that defined her life. She was truly a superwoman.
She is survived by her son, Michael Boyuk, and her son-in-law, Mark German; her sister, Darlene Peres; her nephews David and Greg Peres, and their families; and a host of other family members and friends who will forever cherish her memory. Sandra was predeceased by her sister, Zoryana Boyuk, and her mother, Irene Boyuk.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Sandra’s dear friends Carole and Paulette, who helped her when she needed it most, and to the staff at the Waterford for their care and support.
A celebration of Sandra’s life will be held in the near future. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation in her honour.
Sandra will be remembered for her strength, wit, and her kick-ass attitude. Her legacy of courage and resourcefulness will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
