Richard Douglas Monaghan

Sept 13, 1945 – Jan. 5, 2026

Richard Douglas Monaghan, 80, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2026, in Burlington, Ontario.

Richard had a long career as a teacher and educational administrator. Before retiring, he served as a Special Services Officer for Language Policy with the Canadian Defence Academy. His many talents found expression in art, music, and storytelling, in his love of obscure Latin documents, sailing, and in his ear for the humour in almost everything.

He is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth; his sons, Christian and Michael, and their mother, Lise-Anne. He will be greatly missed by his siblings, Jill, Barry, and David. Richard also leaves his beloved grandchildren — Eamon, Liam, Sean, Clara, Cameron, and Max — who brought him immense joy.

Richard’s dear friends, the Diamonds (John and Judie), the Burfords (Gale and Kathy), and a large extended family mourn the loss of their kind and forever-funny friend.

He will be remembered for his wit, curiosity, and warmth — qualities that filled every room he entered and every friendship he made.

A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
