Obituary

It is with regret and sorrow that we announce the passing of Lieutenant-Colonel (Retired) Pierre Boulé C.D. on April 6th, 2026. Pierre was the eldest of Lieutenant-Commander (Retired) Émilien Boulé C.D. and Carmel's (Galibert) four children and is survived by his sister Hélène and his brothers Robert and Jacques. Émilien’s service as an instructor and educator in the Royal Canadian Navy meant that Pierre’s family was frequently on the move, living on Canada’s East and West coasts and also in Québec.

In 1961, Joseph Anselme Pierre Paul (J.A.P.P.) joined the Canadian Army and went on to serve in the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals/Communications and Electronics Branch for the duration of his 27 year career. Of note, Pierre was deployed to Cyprus as part of the United Nation’s Peacekeeping Force in 1970, and was Commanding Officer of the 5 Canadian Brigade Group Headquarters and Signal Squadron at CFB Valcartier from 1977-79. He then graduated Canadian Forces Command and Staff College in 1982 before completing a Bachelor of Science in Computer Math from Carleton University in 1984 — all while juggling life as a loving husband and father. He concluded his military career as part of the Headquarters Allied Force Command (CENTAG) in Heidelberg, West Germany, before returning to Ottawa to serve in the federal government as an IT executive for 15 years with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

‘Peter’ was a devoted husband to Joanne (neé Miller, predeceased in 2024) - his wife of 56 years - and built a busy life with three children: Patrick (Robin Gibson), Erinn (Patrick Boyd) and Joseph (Tammy), who in turn made him a grandfather seven times over: Mikayla, the late Nicholas, Jordan, Kate, Maggie, Benjamin and Sarah.

Pierre greatly valued education and always considered it to be the best gateway to opportunity. He had a sharp intellect which combined with a dry humour that kept everyone on their toes. He was always available to help anyone with their studies (regardless of subject matter) and could effortlessly speak with deep insight on a variety of topics. Even in his later years, he loved to learn new things - most recently obtaining a certificate from Harvard University for coding/programming in Python and later securing his amateur shortwave radio operator’s license in early 2026. As call sign VE3IDN, Pierre spent his final weeks lighting up the shortwave ionosphere and QSO’ing with morse code enthusiasts all over the world.

Beyond his intellectual pursuits, Pierre loved sailing, computers, motorcycling (often participating in gruelling ‘Iron Butt Association’ long distance rallys across North America), travel, cheering on his grandkids and trouncing opponents in a round of dominoes or bridge with his friends.

He was 81 years old.

Friends and family are invited for a Funeral Mass which will be held on Saturday, May 23 at 11:30am at Divine Infant Catholic Church, 6658 Bilberry Dr, Orléans. There will be light refreshments in the Parish Hall following the service.
