Phyllis Yvonne Stratton passed away peacefully on January 9, 2026, at Muskoka Shores Long Term Care in Gravenhurst, Ontario, after a courageous journey with dementia. At the age of 89, God gently called Mom (lovingly known to most as Nanny) home.
Phyllis was predeceased by her beloved husband, Wilfred Stratton, and former husband, Patrick Ezekiel. She was the cherished daughter of the late Scott and Myrtle Yates and a devoted mother to Wayne, Brian, and Kerry. She was also a loving mother-in-law, stepmother, and Nanny to many, each of whom held a special place in her heart.
Born on May 6, 1936, in Howley, Newfoundland and Labrador, Phyllis carried the warmth, resilience, and kindness of her East Coast roots with her throughout her life. She lived in several places, including Toronto and Barrie, but wherever she was, she made it home through her quiet strength and caring nature.
Phyllis was known for her sharp mind and creative spirit. She found joy in word search puzzles, reading a good book, and crafting beautiful crochet pieces that brought warmth and comfort to those she loved. Her hands were rarely still, and her creations remain treasured reminders of her patience and care.
She had a deep love for family and animals alike. She adored her dogs, Spot and Lady, and delighted in all creatures—her face would light up at the sight of a bird, squirrel, or rabbit. In the kitchen, she shared love through food, especially her homemade bread, toutons made from leftover dough, and traditional jiggs dinner, enjoyed by many.
Phyllis will be remembered for her loving heart, gentle spirit, and appreciation for life’s simple joys. Her legacy lives on in the handmade treasures she leaves behind and in the countless memories shared by family and friends who were blessed to know her.
Those wishing to honor Phyllis’s memory are invited to share a kind word or remembrance with her family. If you prefer to make a donation, it can be made to a charity of your choice or Muskoka Shores Community Long Term Care (They all gave her exceptional care and were very kind and loving to her).
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, with details to be announced.
