Norman John Dowdall

April 19, 1930 – December 23, 2025

Norman Dowdall passed away peacefully at the age of 95, leaving behind a life rich in love, laughter, and genuine connection. Surrounded by a lifetime of shared stories and cherished memories, Norman leaves a legacy defined by warmth, friendship, dedication, and an unwavering love for his family and community.

Norman was the beloved husband of Christina, with whom he shared 68 years of marriage built on love, loyalty, and devotion through every season of life. He was a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend. He was predeceased by his cherished children, daughter Heather, and son Kirk and sister Carol.

He will be lovingly remembered by his adored granddaughters Amber (Kyle), Hayleigh (Grant), and Taylor (Frank); his son-in-law Richard and wife Lisa; his sister Joan and his treasured great-grandchildren Nathaniel, Grant Jr., Annie, Drew, and Eleanor, who brought him endless pride and joy. He will also be fondly remembered by many extended family members and dear friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him.

A true lover of life, Norman found great joy on the ice and the golf course. Hockey was more than a game to him—it was a lifelong passion. A former professional player with the Philadelphia Ramblers and Washington Lions, he loved playing the sport and took immense pride in coaching, mentoring young players, and sharing the lessons of teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship. When he wasn’t at the rink, Norman could often be found on the golf course, savouring the fresh air, friendly competition, and quiet moments that the game brought him. He was known to joke that his golf swing improved slightly after every hockey season—but only slightly.

Norman enjoyed a successful career in Sales at Rothmans before retiring. Though retirement never truly slowed him down, he continued working at Derrydale Golf Club, in the Pro Shop, a place that perfectly suited his love of people, conversation, community, and the game.

Known for his sociable nature and genuine interest in others, Norman had an extraordinary ability to make friends wherever he went. To know him was to feel welcomed and valued. His kindness, warm smile, quick wit, and steady presence will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Above all else, Norman’s greatest happiness came from his family. His legacy is one of love, laughter, mentorship, and compassion—a legacy that will live on through the generations who were fortunate enough to call him theirs and through the countless lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and forever held in the hearts of those who loved him.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Salvation Army are welcome. Details for a celebration of life will be announced soon.
