Nico Havenga

March 9, 1960 — October 11, 2024

Nico Havenga, born on March 9, 1960, in Krugersdorp, South Africa, passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 11, 2024, at his home in Toronto, Canada, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 64 years old.

Nico lived an extraordinary life, moving with his wife and children from South Africa to England at the age of 43, before eventually settling in Ireland and then Canada. Throughout these travels, his passion for engines and his mechanical expertise remained a constant. Nico had an innate ability to diagnose any problem just by listening to an engine, a gift that made him a sought-after mechanic and earned him the admiration of many. He could often tell what was wrong with a car as soon as it pulled into his driveway.

Nico’s talents extended far beyond engines—he was also a skilled craftsman who built go-karts for his children, taught them and their cousins how to swim, and always found a way to entertain and engage with the younger generation. His sense of humor, playfulness, and love for adventure made him a “kid at heart,” someone who delighted in getting into fun mischief with the kids rather than scolding them.

One of his children's favorite memories is the creative bedtime stories he told, combining their favorite characters in fantastical adventures—such as Rambo having tea and cake with the Three Little Pigs. Nico also loved to share tales from his days in the army, filling many evenings with laughter and excitement.

A man’s man through and through, Nico had both street smarts and technical know-how. He was known for being straightforward and blunt but had a heart full of kindness, always ready to help anyone in need. Those closest to him were affectionately given unique nicknames, a testament to the personal connections he made with everyone in his life.

Nico had one true passion that rivaled his love for his family—Formula 1 Grand Prix. Watching the races was like a religious ritual for him, a joy he indulged in every weekend it aired.

Nico is survived by his devoted wife, Elsabe; his children, Johann and Nicola; and his two sisters, Nicolene and Maryna. His family will forever cherish the laughter and joy he brought into their lives, especially the stories, humor, and playful spirit he carried with him until his final day.

"His heart was big, his hands were skilled, and his humor could light up any room. Nico will be deeply missed but never forgotten."
