It is with deep love and sorrow that we announce the passing of Monica Berridge Sills (née Holder) on September 20, 2025, in Kemptville, Ontario.
Monica was born in Saint Lucia, where she spent her early years before embarking on a path that would mark her as a pioneer. She emigrated to Canada as a young woman and became one of the first Black students admitted to McGill University, where she graduated with distinction. After making Canada her permanent home and becoming a citizen, Monica began a career that reflected her brilliance and dedication. She began her career as Head Chemist, and later contributed her expertise at the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), where she was respected by colleagues for her intelligence, tutelage, professionalism, and warmth.
In September of 1973, Monica married the love of her life, Mervyn Berridge Sills. Together, they wrote a story of love that built a marriage of more than 50 years, rooted in loyalty, laughter, and deep devotion. Their journey took them from Laval to Ottawa, before settling in Kemptville, where they have lived for the past 23 years.
Alongside her professional accomplishments, Monica’s life was deeply shaped by her faith. As a devoted Anglican, she gave her gifts generously as a singer and chorister, and she served faithfully as both warden and treasurer of her church. Through her voice, her service, and her leadership, she enriched the life of her parish and embodied her commitment to community and worship.
Monica will be remembered not only for her groundbreaking achievements but also for her grace, resilience, and compassion. She had an unwavering sense of dignity, a quick wit, and a quiet strength that inspired everyone who knew her.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Mervyn, as well as her extended family and friends in Canada, the United States, Saint Lucia, and abroad who will continue to cherish her memory.
The family wishes to thank all who have expressed their condolences and support during this difficult time.
Monica’s life was a testament to perseverance, brilliance, love, and faith—her legacy will live on in all those she touched.
