Milagros (Millie) Pereira Lopez passed away peacefully and surrounded by loved ones on Tuesday, February 17, at the age of 70.
Millie was born in Moreda, Asturias, Spain on January 25, 1956, to parents Manuel and Rosaura. Despite moving to Canada at the age of two, Millie always maintained a strong connection to Spain and would return to her parents’ native Galicia often. It was during one of these trips back that Millie met the love of her life, Jesus (Suso). They were married on August 28, 1983, in San Julian de Eire, and eventually settled back in Canada, where together they raised their two sons, José Manuel and Andres.
Although Millie enjoyed a long and successful career at CRA, her greatest role was that of matriarch. She was fiercely devoted to her boys, making sure to be present for every milestone, big and small. As her own parents grew older, Millie dedicated herself to caring for them as well. But perhaps the crowning point for Millie was the arrival of her grandchildren: Mateo and Luca. Millie loved everything about being a grandmother and proudly took on the moniker of “Yaya” to symbolize this new role. From babysitting to hosting birthday parties and planning day trips, Millie did it all for her grandbabies.
In the quiet moments, Millie could be found with a coffee in hand, reading a book on the history of royals or recounting family stories that only she remembered. She loved to dance, never turned down a sweet treat, and watched the Twilight Saga movies more times than she’d care to admit. She made shopping at El Corte Inglés an Olympic sport, often spending eight or nine hours straight exploring every department.
Millie was predeceased by her beloved father, Manuel. She is survived by her husband Jesus and their two children, José Manuel (Lesly) and Andres (Marion), Millie will also be remembered by her mother Rosaura, siblings José Manuel and Betty (César), brother-in-law Pepe (María José), sister-in-law Lola, aunt Palmira (Galan), dear friends Marisa, Luis, Alicia and family, as well as her many cousins, nieces and nephews, and great-nephew. Her legacy will live on in grandsons Mateo and Luca.
Millie will be deeply missed by all those who knew her.
A service will be held in Ottawa on Thursday, April 23 at 11 am at Paróquia Senhor Santo Cristo. A funeral will be held in Pantón, Spain at a later date.
We would like to extend a special thank you to the teams at The Ottawa Hospital General and Civic campuses.
