In Loving Memory of Michael Lewis Bene

December 8, 1970 – September 1, 2025

Michael Lewis Bene, lovingly known as Mr. Bene, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2025, at the age of 54, after a courageous battle with cancer. Surrounded by love at the Dorothy Ley Hospice in Etobicoke, ON, he left this world as he lived — with grace, purpose, and compassion.

Michael bravely shared his cancer journey publicly, not for sympathy, but to teach, inspire, and uplift others. A dedicated educator with the Toronto District School Board, he touched countless lives in south Etobicoke and Swansea, teaching through empathy, creativity, and joy. His classrooms came alive with science, nature, LEGO, Star Wars, and a deep belief in the potential of every child.

Together with his students, he co-created Pepper the Penguin, a heartfelt children’s book series exploring life’s lessons through the eyes of a kind and curious penguin. Two titles are currently available on Amazon, with the rest to be released in his memory.

Michael is lovingly remembered by his soulmate Ivonne, his children Marisol and Mateo, his parents Albert and Norma, his brother Andrew, his father-in-law Mario, and extended family across Ontario, New Brunswick, and Hungary.

He was celebrated in life at two gatherings held just weeks before his passing. As per his wishes, there will be no funeral service.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to his cousin Lisa, Tia Ana, his dear friends from The Unmotivated Group, his Star Wars GOH Guild mates, fellow educators, students, neighbours, community members, and all who supported him. Special gratitude goes to the Dorothy Ley Hospice for their incredible care during his final days. Thank you.

Michael’s final wish was simple, yet profound: Build a world where kindness is paid forward, compassion is taught freely, and love grows in community.

His was a free-spirit, now truly free. He is now one with the Force.
