Meagan Michie passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the The Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus on April 29, 2026, at the age of 36. Born at the Civic Hospital on August 23, 1989, Meagan was raised in and remained a proud lifelong resident of Ottawa. Meagan is survived by her loving mother, Anne Merklinger, father, Donald, and brother, Connor (with his partner, Alexandra Brunet), who were by her side when she passed. An extended family and close friends have supported Meagan throughout her life. Her strength, humour, warmth, and vibrant spirit will be profoundly missed and forever remembered.
Meagan lived with Prader–Willi Syndrome, but continually surpassed expectations and inspired those around her with her determination, competitive spirit, and joy for life. She earned a college diploma, worked a full time government job, became a decorated Special Olympics medalist, pursued her dream as a Paralympic hopeful, and lived independently. Swimming was one of her lifelong passions, especially breaststroke, proudly following in her mother’s footsteps.
She loved cats, especially her beloved cat Cleo, dogs, movies, video games, dance music, puzzles, theme parks, nature, chess, and expressing herself through fun fashion. Meagan was a proud member of the Brookside Baptist Church.
Meagan left a deep and lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know her. Perhaps most unforgettable was her infectious laugh - one that would crescendo until it would become impossible for anyone nearby not to join in.
A Celebration of Life for Meagan will be held on Sunday, June 14th between 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the RCMP Curling Club, 115 St. Laurent Boulevard in Ottawa. Meagan would love it if you wore bright colours to celebrate her life. Donations in Meagan’s memory can be made to the following charities:
