In Loving Memory of Matthew Keogh
December 22, 1966 - April 11, 2025
Beloved Husband, Father, Brother, Uncle, and Friend
We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Matthew Keogh, who left us far too soon. Matthew was the devoted husband and best friend to Trish, proud father to Aisling and Liam, and cherished brother to Laurence and Tina. He was a loving brother-in-law to Kathryn (Sheldon), Sarah (Tom), Victoria (David), Alex, and Darren, as well as a proud uncle to Madeleine (Jake), Tara (Adam), Amelia, Elise, Alice, and a great-uncle to Charlie, son of the late John and Mary, son-in-law to Richard and Barbara. He was also deeply loved by his dog Toby, who misses him dearly.
Matthew was born in Peterborough in England, moving to Dublin in 1970 when his father John took a job there. He attended Saint Michael’s College where he played rugby and picked up plenty of medals for academic achievements. His artistic side was expressed in his beautifully detailed paintings and drawings, often of warlike subjects. He loved toy soldiers and Action Men! He studied business and then accountancy at University College Dublin.
Matthew ventured from Ireland, in 1992 to Canada for what was supposed to be a two-year work exchange with Coopers & Lybrand. He arrived in British Columbia, travelling east to Toronto by Greyhound bus to explore Canada. It was there that he met Trish in October of that year, and from that moment, his return to Ireland was indefinitely delayed. Although he was very proud to be from Ireland, he embraced the sports and outdoor activities that Canada offers. From spending time with friends for weekend-long canoe trips in Northern Ontario, to learning how to play hockey and ski, he loved being active outdoors.
Matthew and Trish raised their two wonderful children in Oakville. He was immensely proud of Aisling and Liam, always making time to support them in everything they did. Whether skiing, reading, attending dance performances, or coaching and managing soccer teams, Matthew was always by their side cheering them on. He was never too busy to swim, kick a soccer ball, or throw a rugby ball around with them.
A lifelong Arsenal supporter, Matthew’s passion for the team never wavered. He could recall the smallest details of past games, and he enjoyed watching each match—though he always felt the stress of the highs and lows and his passionate exclamations could be heard throughout the house on weekend mornings. His love for the club extended to collecting jerseys, programs, and books, marking his dedication to the team he cherished. He was always keen to strike up a conversation with anyone about football, and could easily make a connection discussing players, managers and Premier League tables. He always remembered which club his new friend followed.
Matthew had a deep appreciation for music, movies, and art. He loved trying local craft beers and dark chocolate. He was an accomplished baker, an avid gardener, and a passionate runner, always exploring new ways to challenge himself and enjoy life.
Professionally, Matthew was a Professional Accountant in Ireland, Canada, and the US. He worked with numerous companies over the years, always striving to give his best in every role. Matthew was deeply respected by his colleagues, many of whom he mentored and inspired to reach their full potential. His work ethic, integrity, and kindness left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Matthew leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and resilience. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, and he will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and those who had the privilege of working alongside him.
If you wish please donate in Matthew’s honour to UNICEF, Canadian Mental Health Association, or Mental Health Ireland.
