It is with sorrow, the family announces the unexpected passing of our son, brother and father on September 23, 2026. Mark is survived by his daughter, Lorelei of Kingston Ontario, Lorelei’s mother Janelle of Kingston, his brother Marty Kauhanen of Sudbury Ontario, his father Norman Kauhanen (Susan) also of Sudbury, and his stepfather Walter Tomasik of Lindsay, Ontario. His beloved mother Linda (née Boulanger) Tomasik predeceased him in 2013.

Born in Sudbury, Ontario, Mark moved to Ottawa in 2001 for school and a career in architectural drafting and design, and to start a family. Mark enjoyed hockey and baseball, playing both sports in his youth. Like his father and brother, Mark was a lifelong Montreal Canadiens fan. He was very proud of his daughter, Lorelei, or ‘Lor’ as he often called her. Mark will be remembered for his wit and his headstrong approach to life.

In his final years, Mark fought private battles with addiction and mental health. We choose to remember Mark by the light of good times, and not by his struggles at the end. We take comfort in knowing that he is finally at peace.

Cremation services provided by Basic Funerals and Cremation Choices Ottawa.

There will be no funeral, as per Mark’s request. A private service will be held for close family and friends on Saturday, October 17. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) on his behalf.
