Marjorie Elizabeth Cameron

September 17, 1937 — January 10, 2026

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Marjorie Elizabeth Cameron. She passed away peacefully on Saturday January 10th, at the Montfort Hospital in Ottawa. Marjorie was 88 years old.

Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in September 1937, Marjorie was the daughter of the late Frederick and Leta (Coombs) Oakley.

She is survived by her brother Graham Oakley (Karen Barron) of Calgary; her children Gary (Cindy Gervais), Shelley (Chris Evelyn), daughter-in-law Patricia (Greg), and son Leonard, all of Ottawa; and her cherished grandchildren Joshua, Sarah, Adam, Melanie, and Ryan. She is also fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews.

Marjorie was recently predeceased by her husband Leonard (Len) in November 2025. She was also predeceased by her son Gregory (Greg), her sister Shirley Barwise (Oakley) and brother-in-law Ralph Barwise, brother Arthur (Art) and sister-in-law Elizabeth (Liz Reid) Oakley; and her parents Frederick (Fred) and Leta (Coombs) Oakley.

Marjorie was born and raised in Spryfield, near Halifax, surrounded by a large and close-knit Oakley extended family. Her father Fred served in the Canadian Army, and in the early 1950’s the family relocated to Canadian Forces Base Borden in Ontario. It was there that Marjorie met her future husband, Leonard (Len). They were married in 1957 and began a life together that would take them many places.

Len’s 32-year military career carried the family across Canada and overseas, with postings in Baden-Baden, West Germany; Summerside, PEI; Trenton, Ontario (twice); and Ottawa, Ontario (twice). In the early years, Marjorie

devoted herself to raising their four children. In the early 1970’s, she began a career as an insurance adjuster, working with several insurance companies until her retirement in 1997.

For the past 10 years, Marjorie made her home at Amica Bearbrook Senior’s Residence in Ottawa. The family extends heartfelt thanks to all the staff at Amica Bearbrook and the Ottawa Hospital for their exceptional care and compassion, especially over the past several months.

In keeping with Marjorie’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. Cremation will take place, and a family burial service (and interment) will be held in Spring 2026 at Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Marjorie’s memory may be made to the Canadian Lung Association or the Canadian Cancer Society.
