Obituary

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Madeleine St. Germain (née D'Amico).

Madeleine was a devoted wife, amazing mother, grandmother and great grandmother, and a wonderful role model for all of her family. Madeleine was the wife of Norman St. Germain and together they had three children, Nicole (Don), Therese (Claude), and Suzanne (Melinda) and six grandchildren, Kevin, Frank, Cole, Cassandra, Danielle and Michel, as well as four great grandchildren, Erika-Rae, Frank, Abigail and Lenore-Madeleine.

She was born in Ottawa (Lebreton Flats) to Ernestine (née Pitre) and Michael D'Amico on September 23, 1932. She was one of seven children: Madeleine and her younger sister Denise and five brothers, Tony, John (Shirley), Jean-Guy, Roger (Shirley) and Paul (Therese). She is the last surviving sibling of this Group of Seven.

Madeleine was a very easy-going lady and when she smiled, she lit up a room even right into her 93rd year. Her easy temperament, casual vibe and eternal optimism made her a very happy person to be around. She was a woman of faith and always had a special place in her heart for Jesus and his teachings. St. Anthony’s Church in Little Italy played a very important role in her childhood as well as in her young family’s life.

Madeleine appreciated the beauty of nature and all of God’s creations. She enjoyed music, singing and games, especially if they meant she could win a prize! She loved her Toronto Blue Jays and Montreal Canadians, but most of all...this lady loved her SWEETS! She could eat a five course meal and then always have room for DESSERT!!!

She worked for the Canadian Federal Government (RCMP) as well as for private industry, including at Caplan’s on Rideau Street. This is where our mother found her passion for designer shoes and clothing. Madeleine definitely had a flare for fashion and displayed this throughout her lifetime with style on her sleeves and Italian leather on her feet!

But don’t let that fool you, because this lady was never afraid to break a nail while piling wood for the winter. One year, she even piled 14 cords of wood and often set up camp in the back country with her husband, young daughters and the occasional black bear.

Madeleine was always ready to adapt and try almost any new thing, except for...DRIVING. This is something that just didn’t come naturally for our mother. Our dad Norman tried his best, time and time again, but it just wasn’t for mom.

She excelled at many things, but one thing in particular played the biggest role in her life and continued to do so up until her last breath. SHE WAS THE BEST MOM EVER! We’re not just discovering this now. We’ve been blessed and have known it all our lives.

If you ever had the opportunity to get to know our mom MADELEINE she would have left a very positive glow in your heart as she always taught us to be one thing and one thing only…KIND: to ourselves and to others. We love you mom and you will forever be in our hearts!!

Our heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Salvation Army Grace Manor for all their care and mostly, their love and compassion for our mother and for her fellow resident friends. Donations can be made in Madeleine’s name to the Salvation Army Grace Manor.

A mass followed by a reception will be held at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, 1060 Baseline Road, Ottawa, Ontario on Saturday April 18, 2026 at 1:30 p.m.
