Peacefully at the age of 95, at Peter D. Clarke Centre Long Term Care, Luis De Sousa passed away surrounded by his family. Without a sound he left us, survived by his wife Carmelia De Sousa. His daughters Ana Sundue (Brian), Claudette De Sousa, and son Gerry De Sousa; his grandchildren Erica Potvin, Lisa Sundue, Blake Potvin, Angela Sundue, and Gabriela De Sousa.
Born on February 18, 1930 on the island Sao Jorge, Azores, he immigrated to Canada in the early 1960s. In his early years as a new Canadian he found himself working in northern Quebec as a lumberjack. Shortly after he moved to Ottawa, Ontario where he met his wife Carmelia and they wed after two short weeks. Enduring the test of time, they would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. He worked construction for almost 30 years until retirement. Through endless days of hard work and sacrifice, he built a life, a family, a home.
You could always find him working in his garden or building something with his hands. There was always something to do. Although far away from the ocean, it never left his heart. Fishing at the ocean side was his greatest desire, and something he never lost grip of. Give him a fishing rod, and a little bit of food, and you would not see him for days. That was where his heart truly belonged. He could be found plucking away at his guitar, or joining in on a music session with family during gatherings. Knowing that people were having a good time was his goal. Never shy to offer up a glass of wine, some food or a story of days gone by, he loved people, his family and his friends.
He was our patriarch, our teacher. He showed us that hard work and sacrifice will help you achieve your goals. Instilling strong core values into his children, and grandchildren. He built a legacy, and those who had the opportunity to meet him are better off for it. He was a Husband, a Father, a Grandfather, he is our JOY.
Thank you to the team at Peter D. Clarke Centre Long Term Care. You adopted him as your “Papa”, and gave him such respect, and dignity. With every smile, laugh, hug or kiss you gave him warmed his heart and allowed him to find joy from a life change. We are forever greatful.
The family will receive friends at Senhor Santo Cristo Church, 1100 Kenaston Street), from 10 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11 o'clock followed by interment at St. Joseph's Parish Cemetery, Orleans.
He will truly be missed, and forever loved by all
