Leon "Bob" McGinley, born on March 1, 1936, passed away peacefully on October 3, 2025, with his family by his side. A dedicated professional in landscape architecture, Bob made significant contributions to the beauty and functionality of the Canadian landscape throughout his illustrious career with US National Parks, Parks Canada, and the National Capital Commission. His designs and collaborative efforts played a pivotal role in shaping Ottawa as we know it today. As part of the NCC, Bob was instrumental in implementing the vision of the celebrated French planner Jacques Greber for the Nation's Capital.
Bob held a Master’s Degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Michigan, which laid the foundation for his distinguished career marked by his commitment to enhancing public spaces. Among his proudest accomplishments was receiving the Ottawa Renews Award for the Mile of History Restoration Project, alongside various accolades for his contributions to courtyards and green spaces across the region.
Beyond his professional life, Bob enjoyed a rich personal life filled with memorable experiences and cherished moments. He shared a deep bond with his wife, Barbara McGinley. Their daughter, Robin McGinley, and son-in-law, Robert Mark, along with their granddaughter, Elina, were sources of immense joy for him, reflecting the love and values he passed on to his family.
Bob also had a fondness for travel and music. He found solace in the sounds of John Denver, Kenny Rogers, and Neil Diamond, often reminiscing about trips to destinations like Palm Springs and Joshua Tree. Days spent enjoying date shakes from Shields and creating special memories with Elina at the Living Desert Zoo and gardens brought him great happiness.
A beloved companion to many, Bob's heart extended to Tortoise McGinley, a cherished pet who enjoyed summers spent together on the back deck, relishing cucumber slices and the attention of his devoted owner.
Bob is survived by his wife, Barbara, daughter Robin, son-in-law Robert, and granddaughter Elina. He was predeceased by his parents, Alice and Leon McGinley, as well as his sister, Darlene Rondo. He leaves behind friends Pat and Mona, alongside a cherished circle of old friends, including Jim Clark, Bob Hosler, and Ed Holubowich. His legacy continues through the love and memories shared by all who knew him.
A celebration of Bob's life will be held at the Funeral Co-operative of Ottawa, located at 419 Saint Laurent Boulevard, Ottawa, ON, K1K 2Z8, on October 14, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Gloucester Emergency Food Cupboard, Canadian Red Cross, or a charity of your choice would be appreciated. He will be missed dearly, but his contributions to his community and the love he shared will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
