Laurence William George Belanger

February 21, 1938 — January 10, 2026

Laurence William George Belanger, age 87, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2026, at the Montfort Hospital in Ottawa, Ontario, following complications associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

Laurence was the loving husband of Joanne (née Chornie) for 61 wonderful years. He was the very best dad to Darryn (Terry) Belanger and to Michelle “The Boss” (Daryn Wantuck). He cherished his role as grandfather to Tyler, Sarah, and Ellie Rose, and as great-grandfather to Madison and baby Jayda Rose. Throughout his life, Laurence placed his family above all else, making it his number one priority.

Born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario, Laurence began his mechanical career as a young apprentice at Tech Motors. He later worked for Adams Mine as a field supervisor for many years before moving with his family to Sudbury, and then to Burlington, Ontario, where he continued his career with Ingersoll Rand. Laurence traveled extensively around the world overseeing the installation and operation of industrial air compressors. He was highly respected for his meticulous eye and strong work ethic.

Laurence enjoyed many years of fishing in Ottawa and the surrounding areas, but especially cherished his time on Howard Lake in Northern Ontario, where he and Joanne owned a beautiful log cabin. It was a place filled with laughter, friendship, barbecues, and good company. When he wasn’t fishing, Laurence could often be found in his driveway working on his cars—washing, polishing, changing the oil, and adding chrome accents whenever and wherever possible. He was known to change his cars almost as often as he changed his socks.

During retirement, Laurence and Joanne spent many happy years in the sunny state of Florida, enjoying leisurely days driving up and down Irlo Bronson Highway in their shiny red convertible.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Garry J. Armstrong Long-Term Care for their care and compassion during Laurence’s short stay, and to the Palliative Care Team at the Montfort Hospital for their kindness and support in helping the family navigate his final days.

Donations, in his name, can be made to the Alzheimer’s society or to DonationLTCSLD@Ottawa.ca. Funds will be used to enrich the lives of the residents living with dementia at Garry J Armstrong LTC. (In your message please include the home’s name and that your donation be used to support the “Recreation Department.”).

Family will celebrate his life at a later date.
