Obituary

Karen Ann MacDonald (nee Ireland) born October 19th, 1941, passed away peacefully after a long journey with Lewy Body Dementia on September 5th, 2026. Predeceased by her loving husband of 55 years, Lorne, her parents, Alma (nee Butson) and Gordon Ireland; and her older sisters Joyce and Mary. She will be dearly missed by her children, Laurel (David Purghart) and Brodie (Stephanie MacDonald), and her grandchildren: Geoffrey, Erin, Connor, Keegan, Charlie and Finnegan. Always in the hearts of her siblings Sandra Basso (Howard) and Glen (Nancy) Ireland. Fondly remembered by her many nieces, nephews and cousins and their families.

Karen had a great passion for taking care of others. She graduated from St. Joseph School of Nursing in 1962 and soon after she began her career at Sudbury General Hospital of the Immaculate Heart of Mary on the Labour and Delivery Unit. In later years, she worked at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Geriatrics on the Veteran's Ward.

In retirement, Karen loved travelling with her husband Lorne – taking cruises and group tours together all over Europe, the United Kingdom and Asia. She always loved to quilt, knit, cross-stitch and she was a part of a quilting and cross-stitching group. Karen spent many years knitting, sewing, and making Halloween costumes for her children, grandchildren and dog Muffin, that will be passed down to kids – and dogs – for generations to come. She enjoyed just about every holiday and decorating for each and every one of them. She enjoyed carving pumpkins, baking Christmas cookies and tarts, and spending quality time with loved ones who loved her oh-so much.

The family will gather for a private interment in Barrie. Donations in Karen's memory to the Alzheimer's Society of Canada are appreciated.
