"Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day"
In memory of Joan "Joanie" Hall, 70, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2026, at Marotta Family Hospital, St. Catharines, enveloped in the music and love she cherished so dearly.
Born on November 26, 1955, Joanie walked through life with a rare, childlike innocence that was a true gift to the world. Though she faced lifelong challenges from birth, her spirit remained entirely untouched by hardship. Instead, she possessed a beautiful, gentle essence that instantly captivated anyone who met her.
Joanie had a profound love for the water; she was happiest when she was swimming, boating, or simply being near the shore. She held a deep fascination for the Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, and brightened any room when sharing that enthusiasm.
Joanie also had a lifelong, beautiful bond with animals. In many photos from her youth, the family dog, Rusty, could always be seen faithfully by Joanie’s side, never far away to serve as her protector. In recent years, that special connection continued with her niece Lisa’s dog, Fallon, who was frequently captured in photos with her paws resting gently on Joanie’s lap, looking up just to be close to her.
Back when she was still able to enjoy solid foods, nothing made her happier than a good hamburger, a favorite treat she would absolutely go crazy for. She also loved Winnie the Pooh and Tigger too, so much so that her wonderful care staff once surprised her with a full Tigger costume to dress up in for Halloween.
A true night owl at heart, Joanie was known to playfully sneak out of her room late at night to join the staff for some late-night TV. The caregivers adored these quiet hours, and having her join them always brought an extra layer of warmth to their shifts.
Joanie also had an immense love for music, dancing, and musicals, finding endless joy in the vibrant colors and beautiful melodies of the Wicked movie musicals. It was only fitting that as she took her final breaths, her favorite song, "Could I Have This Dance" by Anne Murray, was playing softly beside her.
She passed away peacefully with her sweet Tigger plushie held tight in her arms, supported by members of her loving family and care team, with her devoted niece Lisa Hall, her great-niece Sophia Brookshaw, and her cherished care worker Anita by her side.
Throughout her life, Joanie resided in care homes, spending many wonderful years at Bethesda, in Vineland, and most recently in St. Catharines at Grapeview House where she was the heart and soul of her home. The staff and caregivers from both homes frequently noted that she was the sweetest, most easy-going resident they ever had the privilege to support. With her radiating warmth and cooperative nature, she left an indelible, lasting impression on every single person who cared for her. She truly made the world feel a little softer and a lot brighter.
Joanie’s pure love and light will live on through her devoted family:
Predecessed by her loving father and mother Wilfrid Hall, and Ruby Hall.
