  1. Celebrating the Life of Joan Louise Duke (née Hands)
  2. June 9, 1940 – March 16, 2026

Joan Louise Duke (née Hands), age 85, passed away unexpectedly at her home of 45 years in Meadowvale, Ontario, on March 16, 2026. Joan was born on June 9, 1940, in Toronto, Ontario, to William and Mabel Hands and was predeceased by her parents and her brothers, John and Alan.

A proud Toronto girl, Joan grew up on Mahoney Avenue in Mount Dennis. She attended Bala Avenue Public School and later York Memorial Collegiate Institute before going on to Lakeshore Teacher’s College. She dedicated her early career to teaching kindergarten in Maple, Ontario, and at Glen Orchard Public School in Muskoka. Joan, along with her then-husband Barry Duke, owned and operated the Port Carling Garage for a time before moving to Mississauga. There, she worked in purchasing at Peel Engines and Cummins Eastern Canada —all while teaching night school and raising her two daughters as a single Mom.

Joan had an adventurous spirit and a deep love of travel—whether cruising, exploring foreign countries, or heading out on a spontaneous “mystery tour” with nothing but a paper road map. She was rarely at home, preferring to be out enjoying life at the gym, Aquafit, Bridge, Mah Jongg, Meadowvale Senior Social Club, Red Hat events, the theatre, or discovering a new restaurant, bakery, or sweet shop—she especially loved her desserts.

Joan will be forever remembered as a devoted mother, fun-loving grandmother, and loyal friend and family member. She is survived by her daughters, Julie (Cary) Clubb and Valerie Duke (Peter Kelley), and her grandchildren, Ashley, Emily, and Jeremy Clubb, and Sarah Kelley. To her grandchildren, she was affectionately known as “Cuckoo,” inspired by the singing cuckoo clock that made its appearance in her dining room every half hour.

Her extended family included her cherished sister-in-law, Patricia Duke; her nieces and nephews; Peter Kelley Jr. (Bronwynn); and the many dear friends she loved and spent time with throughout the years.

Fiercely independent, Joan was a natural leader, organizer, and advocate for others. She was always the first to sign up for events and just as quick to offer a ride to anyone who wanted to join her.

In keeping with Joan’s wishes, her cremated remains will be laid to rest with her parents at Sanctuary Park Cemetery in Etobicoke.

A celebration of life will be held on a date and location to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to honour Joan’s spirit by calling on a senior, taking a friend on a driving “mystery tour” for lunch, or simply spending some time with a loved one.
