Obituary

Jayasree “Joy” or “Sankari” Poddar passed away peacefully at the age of 76 on Sunday, May 24, 2026. She is survived by two daughters, Sona (Randy) and Debjani (Tim), and four granddaughters: Shayla, Alicia, Aria, and Maya. She was born in Mathabhanga, India. She met and married Amal in 1971 and their journey took them first to London, England, then to Canada. Over the course of her life, Jayasree lived in four Canadian provinces: Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia. Everywhere she went, she was guided by the values of family and community.

When Amal passed away unexpectedly in 1993, Jayasree made the difficult decision to remain in Canada with her two young daughters to give them a good life and, as she always said, teach them to “stand on their own two feet.” Supported in her efforts by her relatives, neighbours, and fellow Bengali community members, she did just that.

Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family, showing her love for them by making gigantic amounts of incredible Indian food (but always describing her multi-course dinners as having made “just a couple of things”). She was a gifted singer and harmonium player and enjoyed performing at numerous Bengali community functions. She was jovial and social, and loved hosting people and sharing stories. She will be missed deeply by all those fortunate to have known her.

Our family is grateful to the staff at the Ottawa Hospital - Civic Campus for their expertise in Jayasree’s final days, as well as the compassionate care provided by the amazing caregivers at Home Instead.
