With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Janice McRae (nee Harwood-Jones) of Ottawa on December 2nd, 2021, at the age of 74, from complications due to Alzheimers. Beloved wife of Peter, loving mother of sons Allister and Paul, dear mother-in-law of Julie Hensley and Stephanie Felkai, and cherished grandmother of Fiona and the late Ruby Felkai. She is survived and lovingly remembered by her three siblings Tony, Tim, and Dawn.
A faithful Anglican, she contributed to the work and outreach of the Church wherever she found herself, whether in Ottawa or abroad. A shared love of travel was sparked by Peter’s Foreign Service postings to Geneva, Havana, and Vienna.
She inherited a lifelong love of the natural beauty of Québec from both of her parents. One of her fondest memories was of helping her father, John, build a cabin in the Laurentians. Rowing and swimming at the cottage remained two of her greatest pleasures throughout the rest of her life, and she spent countless hours there with her family.
Like her mother Lorna, Janice found immense joy in teaching, whether as a science and math teacher at Elmwood School, or as Director of the International School in Cuba.
The family would like to thank the incredible staff at the Elizabeth Bruyère Residence. Because of their constant care and attention, her kind, open-hearted embrace of life was with her until the very end. She would want to be remembered laughing.
A Funeral Service will be held at St. Matthew’s Church, in Ottawa, on December 30th, at 11:00 AM. Reception to follow.
