Obituary

The family announces with sorrow Doug’s peaceful passing on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at Mariposa Hospice House, in Orillia, at the age of 86.

Doug was known for his many years working in the aircraft industry. His passion for airplanes began as an aircraft painter at De Havilland in Downsview, Ontario, which then took him to the Middle East, in the United Arab Emirates, and then finally back home again to manage City Centre Aviation, at the Toronto Island Airport.

Doug will be fondly remembered for his gift of storytelling and for regaling others with tales of his life experiences and travels around the world with his beloved wife, Therese. Always a proud Canadian and a lover of our beautiful outdoors, he was happiest in the back of a canoe, on a northern river, a fishing rod in one hand and a beer in the other.

Doug was the son of the late Joseph Best and the late Violet (Spicknell) Best, and the beloved husband of the late Therese (Quevillon) Best.

He is survived by his sons, Kelly Best (Susan Allen) of Hillsdale and Greg Best (Susan Neville) of Kawartha Lakes. His memory will be cherished by his grandchildren Doug, Jocelyn, Andrew, and Collin Best.

Doug is also survived by his siblings: Ken Best (Betty) of Kamloops; Janet Copeman of Seattle; Joan McElroy of Tottenham; Margaret Best (Jack) of Newmarket; Mike Best (Rose) of Janetville; and Jim Best (Bev) of Oshawa, along with many nieces and nephews.

In accordance with Doug’s wishes, no service will be held, as he did not wish for others to grieve his passing.
If desired, online condolences, memories, and photos may be shared with the family here on Doug's memorial webpage.
