Irene Mary MacNeil

d. November 14, 2024

Ottawa

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Irene Mary MacNeil, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, who passed away peacefully in Ottawa, Ontario, on November 14, 2024. Irene was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, to the late Roderick and Florence (Verner) MacNeil, the third of six children, in a home where love and laughter were never in short supply and where she learned to hold dear the connections she made.

Irene began her professional journey with Bay Motors before moving on to the Town of Glace Bay, followed by a long career as a court reporter with the provincial government. Following her retirement, Irene made her home in Dartmouth, where she continued to cherish the company of friends and family, and then later moved to Ottawa to be close to her daughters.

A gifted and passionate crafter, Irene found joy in many artistic pursuits. Whether it was sewing, knitting, painting, or exploring other forms of handmade creations, she was never without a project. Her creativity knew no bounds, and her love for crafting was matched only by her love of spending time with the people she cherished most. Irene’s favorite moments were those spent with friends and loved ones over a cup of coffee, sharing laughter, stories, and creating memories.

Irene is survived by her two daughters, Cheryl McMullin (Jonathan Gu) and Karen Ann (David) Kingham, and her three granddaughters, Lauren, Brenna, and Ashlyn, who brought her immense pride and joy. She is also survived by her siblings Eric MacNeil, Jerry (Coleen) MacNeil, Muriel Salyzyn, Joan (Ken) Farnam, and Bill (Melissa) MacNeil. She is predeceased by her sister-in-law, Helen, and brother-in-law, Michael Salyzyn. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her, and her legacy of love, warmth, laughter, and creativity will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Irene’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

Irene’s gentle spirit and love of life will be remembered always. Rest in peace, Irene, knowing you will never be forgotten.
