Ilse Dugnus (nee Siegel), aged 87, suddenly and unexpectedly entered into glory on September 25, 2026.

Born in Czechoslovakia on February 22, 1939, Ilse moved to Germany as a small child, enduring a difficult upbringing during the war and postwar years. In 1959, she courageously immigrated to Canada. Though she arrived unable to speak English, her exceptional talent as a seamstress shone through immediately; during a job interview on Spadina, she was asked to sew a blouse, crafted it beautifully, and was hired on the spot. Determined and resourceful, she taught herself English by watching television and attending night school.

Throughout her life in Canada, Ilse proudly kept close to her German roots, always finding a sense of home and community through the Hansa Haus, Brandt Deli, and Dimpflmeier Bakery and she delighted her family by making the absolute best bread dumplings and rouladen.

Ilse lived life with immense style and grace. She was always dressed beautifully, looking dignified with her hair, makeup, and jewellery perfectly styled. Highly social, she loved nothing more than spending time with family and friends. She possessed an extraordinary green thumb, filling her spaces with gorgeous plants, and had a passion for home decor, frequently rearranging her apartment and showcasing her favorite pieces, especially her cherished elephants and giraffes. A keen animal lover, she always shared her life with a dog or two, and her absolute favorite escape was a peaceful drive through the stunning landscapes of Algonquin Park.

Ilse will be remembered for her resilient spirit and her effortless elegance. Her family will forever cherish the laughter shared around her table, her quiet strength, and the unconditional love that shaped all of their lives.

Ilse was predeceased by her husband’s Josef Pischinger (2004) and Walter Dugnus (2017). She leaves behind a family that was her absolute pride and joy. She was the beloved mother of Ronald Pischinger (Alison) and Christine Tetz (Bryan); treasured Oma to Chelsea (Jeremy), Grant, Sydney, Logan (Megan) and step Oma to Emily (Cris), Michelle (Mark), and Brandon (Ashley); and proud Great Oma to Olivia, Diana, Oliver, Jaxson, Laila and William. She is also survived and fondly remembered by her extended family in Canada and Germany.

In keeping with Ilse's wishes, a private service and cremation will take place.
