It is with deep sadness and much fondness that we announce the passing of Hugh Logan-Smith on November 3, 2024, just days after celebrating his 90th birthday. Born on October 31, 1934, in Jamalpur, India, to British parents who were likely drinking tea and attempting to understand cricket in a land far removed from England’s shores, Hugh’s life was a remarkable journey of culture, adventure, family, and joy.
Hugh returned to the United Kingdom as a teenager and served some time in the Royal Air Force, but the adventure was far from over. In the late 1950s, feeling that the British weather wasn’t quite bleak enough for his liking, he packed his bags and immigrated to Canada, where he found his true home.
Settling in Toronto, Hugh built a life filled with love and laughter. He married and had two daughters. He adored his “chicken” and “choo” (yeah, we don’t know either).
Hugh was an avid squash player and had a weekly tradition of playing squash every Friday afternoon, a commitment he maintained well into retirement, at which point he transitioned to full time Papa. He was also a talented artist and continued drawing and creating up until he passed.
When he wasn’t creating art or chasing after a squash ball, Hugh loved nothing more than sitting down in front of the television to watch sports. Any kind of sports. Whether it was hockey, soccer, rugby, cricket, or golf, he watched with the same fervor as if he were coaching from the sidelines. It was often noted that the remote control was more of an extension of his arm than an actual device.
As for his favorite food and drink, few things could make Hugh happier than a cold Coke and fresh samosas.
Hugh is survived by his Daughter Lori (Robert), and grandchildren Justin, Christian, Connor, Logan, and Kailey. He was preceded in death by his sister Paddy and daughter Alison.
Hugh’s wishes were that there be no service. A small family celebration of life will take place at a future date.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the IOOF Seniors Homes Inc., Barrie for their excellent care of Hugh during his last few years. If inclined, memorial donations can be made at https://ioof.com/give-now
Hugh, you were one of a kind. We will miss you more than words (or samosas) can express. Rest in peace, Papa, and may you forever have a Coke in hand and a remote by your side.
