With deep sadness, the family of Gordon Huson Barry announces his passing on June 11, 2026, at the age of 85 in Meaford, Ontario. He passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with heart disease and Parkinson’s disease. Born on August 10, 1940, in Toronto, Ontario, Gordon—“Gord” to many—led a life defined by love, service, sport, and steadfast commitment to helping others.
A proud graduate of the University of Toronto (1963), Gord began his career teaching mathematics in Uganda, East Africa, an experience that set the tone for a lifelong commitment to education, before returning to Toronto to serve generations of students in the Toronto District School Board (1967 to 1997). Gord dedicated himself to teaching Mathematics, inspiring students and sharing his passion for the subject. From 1985 to 1993, he took on the role of Head of Mathematics at Danforth Collegiate & Technical Institute, guiding both students and colleagues with expertise and commitment. After earning the respect of his peers throughout a remarkable career in education, he concluded his professional journey as Vice-Principal at Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute, retiring in 1997. Gord led by example, which was his greatest lesson plan of all. After retiring from teaching, Gord founded The Barry Group, a tax services business with the same patience, clarity, and integrity he was known for in the classroom. He helped countless individuals navigate life’s practical details with kindness.
Gord’s passion for sport was lifelong. An accomplished curler, he won numerous trophies and generously led clinics to help others improve their game. He loved golf, right down to crafting clubs by hand—and played and coached rugby, baseball, basketball, and hockey. Outside of sports, he relished playing euchre, enjoyed dabbling in the stock market and treasured family camping trips to the Ontario Teachers’ Federation (OTF) Camp. He lived to love, teach, learn, and laugh, with the belief in the value of life’s experiences and the communities they build. We will remember Gord for his ready smile, his steady encouragement, and the way he made each person feel capable and seen.
Above all, Gord’s greatest pride was his family. Gord is lovingly reunited with his parents, Christopher Oscar (Borden), and Vera (née Huson). Gord is survived by his beloved wife and best friend, Jeanette (née Buddin); his daughters, Candace (David MacNeil) and Stacey (Charlie Besko); and his five cherished grandchildren: Oscar, George, Emily, Oliver, and Breanna, who will carry forward his warmth, wit, and integrity. He will be deeply missed by his sister, Lois Motuzas, as well as his cousins, niece, nephews, countless friends, colleagues, and former students.
Gord was loved and admired as a husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, colleague, mentor, teacher, neighbour, and friend.
Cremation has taken place. Celebration of Life details will be announced by the family at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Gord’s memory may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or Parkinson Canada.
