Gloria Carole Lewis (née Hewitt) passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 3, 2026, in Ottawa, Ontario, at the age of 88.
Gloria was a woman of rich contrasts. Beautiful and flamboyant, Gloria had a love for colour, often expressed through her clothing and distinctive costume jewellery. Her style reflected her warmth, confidence, and zest for life. She was usually the life of the party—quick with a laugh, a story, and a sparkle in her eye—but she also deeply cherished her quiet moments with a good book. Family was at the heart of her life, and time spent together was usually filled with humour, a glass of wine, a game of cards, and memorable stories. She was open-minded, accepting of human imperfections, and known for her steady optimism.
Though the last months of her life were challenging, Gloria faced them with courage and strength. She passed with a sense of peace, feeling she had lived a full life.
Gloria is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Lona Robertson (Bill Robertson) and Tara McGowan (John McGowan); her stepson, Larwence Lewis (Patricia Lewis), her cherished granddaughters, Lauren, Sachi, Kara and Robyn; her beloved great-grandchildren, Brayden, Isabel, Jade, Nikko, and Brooklyn; her sister, Brenda; extended family members, Josephine, Line, Lucien, and Gerry; friends, Fleurette and Kathy.
She was predeceased by her parents, Mel and Mary Hewitt; her sister, Sheila; brothers-in-law Bill and Pete; her stepson, Brian; and her beloved dogs, who were always close to her heart.
Huge thanks go out to her amazingly supportive palliative care team - Dr. Skaff, Nurse John S., and all the nurses and PSWs at Chapel Hill Retirement Community, especially Liberty with whom she developed a special bond.
A celebration of Gloria’s life with close friends and family will be held in February.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Gloria’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
