Gladys Mae Webb, was born on September 2, 1927 to David and Lena Webb.
She grew up on the farm in Tay Township and attended the one room school down the line on the land that her father had donated, and was the only student in her class for her whole school career!
She left school after 8th grade and helped out at home on the farm until she found work in a factory making shirts and then on the boats that plied the Great Lakes. In later years, her son Stan arranged for mom to go and visit one of the boats that she had worked on.
Gladys was a diligent helper for her mother and father, and learned many practical life skills. Cooking, baking, sewing, knitting, quilting and keeping house. But also the skills on the farm, in the barn, in the fields, with the livestock and the horses.
She met her future husband Edwin Wismer at her best friend‘s wedding. Kay McMann was getting married to Jack Wismer, Ed’s younger brother. One year later, on April 8, 1950, Ed and Gladys were married in Vasey, Ontario.
Their son Stan born in 1951 and Robert in 1954. Connie came along in 1963, and Paul arrived in 1966.
While Gladys had grown up in a godly and devout family, when the Billy Graham Crusade came to Toronto in the fall of 1955, she attended and confirmed her faith with a public decision to receive Christ as her Lord and Savior. This gave her great assurance and her faith was always the driving force of her life, a tender but tough faith that informed everything she did.
Mom developed a passionate love for the Lord Jesus. And a commitment to follow him. Up to the very end, her life was marked and sustained by worship, reading His word, prayer and good deeds.
In 1958, Ed retired from working for 20 years at the steel factory, and he and Gladys bought a 50 acre farm outside of the city limits Barrie. While Dad’s background had been in the factory in the city, and in market gardening, and in raising goats, Mom brought her expertise as a bright and involved and dedicated young bride who had been brought up on a traditional farm. Mom and Dad were a great team.
Mom cared for her extended family. She regularly hosted her nieces and nephews for a week in the summer, and made sure that it was during the week of Vacation Bible School at our Church!
Gladys became involved with Bible study fellowship and eventually became a leader, overcoming her shyness and fear of public speaking.
There will be a Funeral Service for Gladys on Monday, June 22nd at Emmanuel Baptist Church 374 Salem Rd, Barrie, ON L9J 0C5. Visitation at 9:30 am, Service at 11 am, Reception following the service until 1:30 pm.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Emmanuel Baptist Church, to Shepherd’s Village 3760 Sheppard Ave E, Scarborough, ON M1T 3K9 where Gladys lived happily for many years, or to a charity of your own choosing.
