Dr. Francisco Javier Ucan-Marin

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Francisco Ucan Marin on September 11, 2025, in Ottawa, Canada.

Francisco was the first born of the Ucan-Marin family, the eldest of five siblings, and proud descendant of a Mayan family from Hecelchakάn, Campeche, México. He was a scientist, researcher, a poet, and above all a generous human being. He was a pillar of the Mexican student and researcher community in Canada, always ready to support and to build bridges. He was deeply proud of his Mexican and Mayan roots, which inspired both his life and his work. His warmth and sense of humour filled the hearts of family and friends and built connections among us all.

He will be deeply missed by his family in Canada and in Mexico, his friends, and his community. His legacy lives on in his dedication, his friendship, and above all, in his daughter, whom we accompany with all our love in this painful moment.

Rest in peace and love, dear Francisco.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 3, 2025 at 6 p.m. at Shiloh Holiness Church, 1151 N River Rd., Ottawa, ON, K1K 3W5, where all are warmly invited to join us in remembering and honoring Francisco’s life and the legacy he leaves behind. (Please note that food will not be served at this event.)

Con profunda tristeza anunciamos el fallecimiento del Dr. Francisco Ucán Marín, ocurrido el 11 de septiembre de 2025 en Ottawa, Canadá.

Francisco fue el primogénito de la familia Ucán-Marín, el mayor de cinco hermanos y orgulloso descendiente de una familia maya originaria de Hecelchakán, Campeche, México. Fue científico, investigador, poeta y, sobre todo, un ser humano generoso. Francisco fue un pilar de la comunidad de estudiantes e investigadores mexicanos en Canadá, siempre dispuesto a apoyar y a tender puentes. Se sentía profundamente orgulloso por sus raíces mexicanas y mayas, que inspiraban tanto su vida como su trabajo. Su calidez y sentido del humor llenaron de alegría los corazones de familiares y amigos, y ayudaron a crear vínculos entre todos nosotros.

Su partida deja un vacío inmenso entre quienes tuvimos el privilegio de conocerlo y aprender de él. Será profundamente extrañado por su familia en Canadá y en México, por sus amistades y por su comunidad. Su legado vive en su dedicación, su amistad y, sobre todo, en su hija, a quien acompañamos con todo nuestro cariño en este momento tan doloroso.

Descansa en paz y amor, querido Francisco.

Todos están cordialmente invitados a unirse a nosotros para recordar y honrar la vida de Francisco y el legado que deja. (Por favor, tomen en cuenta que no se ofrecerá comida durante este evento.)
