Celebrating Eric Wipfler
It is with full hearts that the family of Eric Wipfler announces his passing on Monday August 25, 2025 at the age of 88.
Eric was born on April 3, 1937, in Kirchheim, Germany, and grew up in Welzheim. He loved sharing memories from those early years—running through fields, “borrowing” of army gear, “fishing” the questionable way with dynamite, and once throwing himself over his little brother Peter during an air raid. After finishing school he trained as a carpenter, became a cabinet maker, and tore around on a motorcycle with his “gang”.
In 1957, he sold his motorcycle and sailed on a ship to Canada. It was here that he met the love of his life and married, his wife of 61 years, Renate in 1964. In 1966 they settled on Marlene Court in Mississauga, here they spent 42 years building a home full of laughter, cherished friendships with neighbours, their treasured church family, and hosting legendary AP Green turkey holidays. Their children—Robert (1970), Corinne (1972), and Nicolle (1974)—grew up there, they witnessed the weddings of Corinne to Justin Abbruzzese (1997) and Robert to Sri Cheverie (2003) and later came their granddaughters: Amber (2002), Brooke (2004), and Eden (2006).
Eric worked at Stelco and AP Green before starting his own consulting firm, REW Consultants. In 2008, Eric and Renate moved to their current home with Robert, Robert’s wife Sri, and daughter Nicolle. He kept consulting in the refractory world for a while, welcomed his grandson Dane (2010), and finally—after some gentle insistence from Renate—retired in 2009.
Retirement suited him. He traveled widely, visited family and friends across Canada, the U.S., and Germany, grew his beloved tomatoes, kept up with all the drama in the wrestling world, watched all his favorite westerns and never missed a chance for a favorite meal and beer with family and friends. In the last year he slowed down and, as just like he lived, he said goodbye his way—surrounded by the people he loved and grounded in his faith.
Eric leaves behind his beloved Renate; his children Robert (Sri), Corinne (Justin), and Nicolle; and four grandkids he absolutely adored—Amber, Brooke, Eden, and Dane. He was “Onkel” to many nieces and nephews and a loyal friend to more people than we can count. He will be so deeply missed.
There are no words to express how grateful we are to the many caring doctors and nurses from Trillium Hospital that helped to make his last years more comfortable. A special thanks to Richard from ProResp who kept showing up to help make things easier.
Until we meet again.
If you’d like to send flowers, please have them delivered to St. John’s on September 5 (back entrance for deliveries). If you prefer, a donation in Eric’s name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would mean a lot to the family.
