Peacefully in his 94th year at the Ruddy-Shenkman hospice in Ottawa.
Born on June 19, 1930, in St. Fergus Scotland, Duncan emigrated to Canada in 1954 on the ship RMS Franconia. He married his beloved spouse (the late Helen Cruikshank) in 1955 in Montreal. His successful career as a biochemist spanned 37 years (Ontario Research Foundation, later Ortech) and included time working in Cape Dorset (now Kinngait). His many interests and pastimes over the years included sailing, cycling, hiking, amateur radio and whisky tasting with Companions of the Quaich. He was a passionate contributor and patron to the Bruce Trail Conservancy and the Royal Botanical Gardens in Hamilton, and the Oakville Symphony Orchestra. As a longtime resident of Oakville, he raised his family and formed many lasting, cherished friendships.
Dear father to Catherine (Dale) and Ian (Cathy), proud grandfather to Callum (Shannon) and Emma. Duncan’s wonderful sense of humor will be missed by his friends and family.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has been completed with a private family ceremony to follow at a later date.
Thanks to the caring staff at Timberwalk Retirement Home, the Queensway Carleton Hospital, and The Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice in Ottawa. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to the charity of your choice. Duncan was a generous supporter of many environmental, children’s and health focused charities.
