DOUGLAS EDWIN SMYLIE (BEng, MA, PhD)
It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, friend, and Bichon Frise lover Douglas on April 20th, 2018. He will be sorely missed. Born on the family farm in New Liskeard, Ontario on June 22nd 1936, Douglas led a full life and was a world-renowned scientist in the field of geophysics, winning the J. Tuzo Wilson Medal in 2002. He considered his greatest accomplishments to be raising his four children, building his home on Lake Simcoe and publishing a book of his life’s work in geophysics titled Earth Dynamics. He felt lucky to have been married to two women he adored, Susan and Mavis. In his later years, he enjoyed working out at the YMCA, spending his winters at the World Tennis Club in Naples, Florida, his time with his group of Mixed Nuts tennis friends, and most of all looking out the window or sitting on the observation deck with a Leffe Brun admiring the Lake Simcoe views with his wife Susan and his dog Bijou. He is survived by his much loved family, including wife Susan, children Diane (Rob), Janet (Nancy), Hugh (Allison), and Andrea (Matt), grandchildren Alan, Lance, Ashley, Bob, Ella, Ben, Andreas, Quinn, Jay, Grace, and Gavin, nephews Sandy (Danielle) and Byron and sister-in-law Jo-Anne.
