When I think of our mom’s last days, I think of the lines from the Dylan Thomas poem: “Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Do not go gentle into that good night.”
The week that saw mom passing, saw her fight and struggle to hold onto life.
She did finally go into that ‘good night’ on Sept. 22, 2026, at Victoria Village Manor. Her children and grandchildren were a constant at her bedside.
Anyone who knew Doris before Alzheimer’s changed her, knew her as a strong, organized, very capable woman. She was smart and sassy. These qualities served her well in a long, successful career working in management for HBC.
We knew her as a dutiful mother, loving grandmother, and faithful wife. As a woman of faith, we were raised and guided by the Christian principles that she instilled in us.
Doris was a proud Maritimer, and though she lived most of her adult life in Ontario—her heart was always in NS.
She requested that she be returned home upon her passing to be buried with her mom, dad, sister, and grandparents in Hillside Cemetary, Mahone Bay, NS.
Needless to say, Jamie, Emily and I will miss her immensely. As will her grandchildren whom she loved: Christopher, Mackenzie, Terence, Maeve, Simon, and Evan.
We are comforted in knowing that she is in Heaven with Carla, Ole, and Mackenzie.
Mom was cared for with kindness and compassion by the Balmoral Unit staff at VV. They are the unsung heroes in our world.
Thank you, Tia, Sara, Amber, Estelle.
Mom’s passing will leave a big void in the lives of all who loved her, and we are grateful for many happy memories and the knowledge that hers was a life well lived.
