Donald Sheldon MacLeod, age 91, passed away unexpectedly after a cardiac event on October 20, 2026, in Ottawa, Ontario.
Don was born on September 26, 1935, in Donkin, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, to John A. and Christine M. MacLeod (née MacPherson).
Don enjoyed a successful career as a Systems Analyst with the Government of Canada. Throughout his life, he was an active volunteer, contributing his time and energy to sports organizations, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, his Catholic parishes, and Alcoholics Anonymous.
Don is survived by his four children, Carolyn, J. Sheldon (Marcia), Sharon (Peter), and Lori (Joe). He took great pride in and deeply cherished his eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, as well as his many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary Margaret MacLeod (née Currie), and by his siblings (Annie, Archie, Clifford and Lucille).
Don will be remembered for his generosity, quick wit, and unmistakable dry sense of humour. He loved telling jokes and, in his younger days, was known to surprise family and friends by breaking into the occasional risqué song, always delivered with perfect timing and a twinkle in his eye. He was adventurous and genuinely up for almost anything.
One of his greatest accomplishments was his commitment to sobriety. For 47 years, he lived a sober life and was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous. Through his example, encouragement, and service to others in recovery, he offered hope, support, and understanding to countless people. His dedication to the principles of recovery reflected the strength, humility, and compassion that defined his character.
Don was masterful at cooking lobster and crab and always made sure there was a full table for his visiting children and grandchildren. When asked, he offered sage advice, delivered with grace and wisdom.
He leaves behind family, friends, and members of the recovery community who will miss his wisdom, laughter, kindness, and steadfast friendship. Though we mourn his passing, we celebrate a life rich in purpose, service, resilience, and love.
Don will be interred in the summer of 2027 at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Mira, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
