It is with deep sadness we share the news that Donald William Valley passed away peacefully on October 9th, 2026, at the Royal Victoria Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Don was the beloved husband of the late Margaret Patricia (nee Sproule). They shared 61 wonderful years of marriage before Pat’s passing in November 2024.
Don will be deeply missed by his children, Jocelyn (Alan Brown), Donald, Marsha, and Joanne (Thomas); his grandchildren, Aidan (Rachel) and Jake (Skyllar); and his adorable great-grandchild, Kayce. He was predeceased by his sister Joan Ban (Thomas), and his brother Garry (Sharron).
Born in Barrie on August 20, 1936, to William and Margaret Valley, Don followed in his father’s footsteps and developed a lifelong passion for cars. He and his late brother Garry worked alongside their father at W.S. Valley and Sons, operating taxis, transport trucks, car and truck rental, and school buses.
Don was also a local hero. On May 5th, 1959, at just 22 years old, he found himself driving a school bus full of children down Bayfield Street hill when the brakes failed. Thanks to his quick decision-making, everyone was saved.
In his later years, Don entered the real estate business, working with several local firms in Barrie. Outside of work, he could often be seen proudly driving one of the vintage cars he collected, stopping by the local coffee shop to catch up with friends, visiting car dealerships to see the latest models, or watching hockey.
Don will be lovingly remembered for his ever-present smile, his many jokes, his stoic nature, and his outgoing personality. Above all, he was a proud husband and father who cherished time with his family. His warmth, humour, and presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
There will be a graveside service for family and close friends on Friday, October 16th at 2pm. It will be held at the Church of the Redeemer Cemetery at 2 St Clair Street in Duntroon.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Don's memory to the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
